چکیده

This research aims to develop a novel instrument for sociomusical interaction where a number of participants can produce sounds by feet in collaboration with each other. The developed instrument, beacon, is regarded as embodied sound media product that will provide an interactive environment around it. The beacon produces laser beams lying on the ground and rotating. Audio sounds are then produced when the beams pass individual performer’s foot. As the performers are able to control the pitch and sound length according to the foot location and angles facing the instrument, the performer’s body motion and foot behavior can be translated into sound and music in an intuitive manner.

Amergent Music: Behavior and Becoming in Technoetic & Media Arts

Norbert Herber Amergent Music: behavior and becoming in technoetic & media arts Technoetic and media arts are environments of mediated interaction and emergence, where meaning is negotiated by individuals through a personal examination and experience--or becoming-within the mediated space. This thesis examines these environments from a musical perspective and considers how sound functions as an...

Computational Modeling of Mind and Music

Music can be defi ned as organized sound material in time. This chapter explores the links between the development of ideas about music and those driven by the concept of the embodied mind. Music composition has evolved from symbolic notated pitches to converge onto the expression of sound fi ligrees driven by new techniques of instrumental practice and composition associated with the developme...

Theory and Practice of Physical Modeling for Musical Sound Transformations: An Instrumental Approach to Digital Audio Effects Based on the CORDIS-ANIMA System

This thesis proposes the use of CORDIS-ANIMA physical modeling formalism as a mean of designing musical sound transformations under the concept of instrumental interaction. It provides new results and new discussions in musical signal processing and in the design of digital audio effects. The aim is to investigate the possibilities of physical modeling to provide more “plausible” sound modifica...

TwinkleBall: A Wireless Musical Interface for Embodied Sound Media

In this paper, we introduce a wireless musical interface driven by grasping forces and human motion. The sounds generated by the traditional digital musical instruments are dependent on the physical shape of the musical instruments. The freedom of the musical performance is restricted by its structure. Therefore, the sounds cannot be generated with the body expression like the dance. We develop...

Collaborative music interaction on tabletops: an HCI approach

With the advent of tabletop interaction, collaborative activities are better supported than they are on single-user PCs because there exists a physical shareable space, and interaction with digital data is more embodied and social. In sound and music computing, collaborative music making has traditionally been done using interconnected networks, but using separated computers. Musical tabletops ...
